Pale Horse 04:22
Lay it on me, the fire and the brimstone I have wandered through the darkness of catacombs I’ve been praying that I might cross this threshold Must I suffer the fate of the unfaithful? They say you reap just what you sow As above and so below I fed the flames with bellows I watched them rise, I watched them rise I’m a cipher, I’m a lifer Watch the flames grow higher I’m a moonshiner, I’m a pale horse rider You might find me asleep ‘neath the weeping willow Roaming the streets after the bars close with no place to go I’m a pariah, my hand against every man that I’ve known But I’m no liar, nothing to tell ‘fore I hang from the gallows They say you reap just what you sow As above and so below I fed the flames with bellows I watched them rise, I watched them rise I’m a cipher, I’m a lifer Watch the flames grow higher I’m a moonshiner, I’m a pale horse rider I watched them rise…

Fading fast, they say the good times don’t last And the folks who still try are living in the past Dreams soften, they become like old friends That you think about often but you never call them Every Saturday night you leave the house Searching for the magic you once took for granted But nine times out of ten I fall through the cracks Like cigarette ash someone sweeps up in the morning One for my lover, two for the wine The lines on my face and the ties that bind It’s the wind in the pines, it’s a crooked bloodline Closing time, tumblin’ three sheets to the wind I spent every last dime I earned at my shift Watching drunk kids at the diner Driving nice cars, on their phones Someday they’ll be signing my paychecks They don’t even tip the waitress But who the hell am I? Just some bastard of buckaroo Who never left his hometown, who’s dreams are long overdue You can find me at a tavern chasin’ bourbon with beer In some strip mall sprawl at the edge of the western frontier One for the wicked, two for the holy Three for the paradigm shifting ever so slowly It’s a lonely decline when your well runs dry

Raising Cane by the moon White River Junction The sunrise came too soon It’s time to punch in Burn the candle at both ends Fumbling through the darkness Paint the town red as rum Burn every bridge It's no surprise it came to this Fever Valley Pitch Doubts have hardened Hearts have calloused Trying to outrun this madness I’m burnin’ up How far down do I gotta dig till I’m on the other side of it? Clouds have parted Heat is rising Patch me up with a silver lining I’m burnin’ up
4.
Sedona 03:03
I can hear you breathing on the end of the line There’s nothing left to say But we hang on for another moment or two Cos we know everything’s about to change It’s midnight at a truck stop Ooh, my eyes are bloodshot Gonna drive all night, put some distance between us A friend told me ‘bout this place north of Phoenix Sedona We didn’t work this hard just to let it slip away I was always in it for keeps Neither of us are wrong ‘bout why we couldn’t make it right Starting over just got lonelier each time we tried Headlights on the blacktop Moon over the cash crops Well the needle’s dropping fast and the ashtray’s fillin’ up And I’m still a long, long ways from Sedona Driving through the desert towards the Arizona line With the windows down, cool air rushing inside Let it soothe my soul, let it ease my mind I’ve got a ways to go but I got plenty of time Red rocks risin’, shadows fallin’ I can hear your voice through the canyons calling I used to like the feeling of starting over Put the pedal to the floor, I’m getting closer to Sedona
5.
Riverbed 02:33
In the dog days of the summer The heat’s so thick you could sweep it in And the feeling that I’m under Is gonna stick around, baby, it don’t quit It’s nothing new and it’s no excuse I watch the dawn come on slowly every morning When I walk down to the river’s edge I’m so tired I could curl up in that riverbed
6.
Sirens calling, calling me back ‘Neath them waters where I would descend Like a sinking ship on the horizon Like a setting sun reveals a sky full of diamonds When them sirens cast their spell on me I cast my silver into the sea I’ll be drowning these wounds in a cenote saloon Ooh, them daughters will soothe your sorrows You’ll need not worry until tomorrow They’ll take you back to the farm Lead you away arm in arm At the bottom of them limestone canyons Fallen angels and drifting phantoms I’ll be drowning my sorrows in a cenote saloon I don’t mind drowning these blues in a cenote saloon

Sidereal 01:29
8.
I am mystified looking through your eyes You’re not innocent and neither am I In the pale moonlight you see me as I am Eyes of obsidian, skin of porcelain I find your hand in the dark, take it in mine I wonder where I am along your lifeline You always said I hold you right up at the edge But I’m not the man I used to be I always took myself so seriously Before you go changing your mind again Won’t you take me out tonight in the pale moonlight so true? Any neon sign will do Time keeps passing like sand through my hands And all I’m asking is for a little piece of land So I can build towards something and finally get ahead Something that won’t vanish soon as I cash my check Before I go changing my mind again I’ve got a vision and I’ve got to see it through Any neon sign will do I like that wild hair and that look in your eyes It says ‘I wanna get into some trouble with you tonight’ On the jukebox Patsy’s singing “I Love You So Much That It Hurts” Put your arms around me darlin’ We don’t have to say the words Oh, I’ll go anywhere with you But any neon sign will do
9.
They say that Satan swims in the bottle And that bottle is a portal straight to hell He’ll pull you down and fill you with his darkness He’ll creep into your conscience & possess your heart and soul When my will is weak and my outlook’s bleak I go wanderin’ Lookin’ for to ease my mind No higher power can provide the comfort that I seek No one can sympathize quite like the bottle And I know the good Lord knows I’ve been unfaithful I just hope that he’s still listening Yeah I sure hope he ain’t already cut the cable When I pray for him to send me a midnight angel Midnight angel, oh, sweet angel I pray the Lord will send down a midnight angel Won’t you peel me off this barstool and pull me in real close? Press your lips to mine, suck the devil right out of my soul And in the morning when I wake I will see the light If I live to see another day I will be so grateful… For my midnight angel, oh, sweet angel I pray the lord will send down a midnight angel Fallen angel, oh, sweet angel I pray the Lord will send down a midnight angel
10.
Spring Tide 03:26
Red, Wild Poppy Orange, Marigold Yellow, Butterflower A spring tide in my soul Green, leaves of lime Blue, Ultramarine Purple, Judas Flower A dream within a dream Your heart and my heart Are very old friends Oh, we drift through time Like cottonwood carried by the wind How long have I been sleeping? Lungs are breathing, heart’s still beating I can feel your hand in mine I can hear the songbird singing Oh, my blood’s been waiting For true love to unfold When our hearts align A spring tide in my soul
11.
Tennessee 04:49
I know you ain’t satisfied It’s why you can’t sleep at night Cos when the light fills the sky It drains the life out of you So you sleep all day and rise with the moon I can’t tell you nothing you don’t already know Just promise to go easy on yourself But I know you won’t Cos you can’t escape this place and time You just wait for something good to come along Remember when we drank our way From Memphis down to New Orleans? Got kicked out of every honky tonk in between We left some jealous husbands in the dust Lord it’s true We watched some tearful women Fade away in our rearview Let’s rewind to a time When the red wine flowed Rolled out to Tennessee Never planned on going home You married Mindy & moved up to Lexington I didn’t have it in me So I went back to where I’m from I picked up some bad habits I grew ugly and numb My heart was as dark as the nights were long My eyes were as grey as the skies in Portland, Oregon I tried to drink away my sorrows But my sorrows learned to swim Are you nursing your pain Or are you feeding it? Well I’ve got no one to blame Only faces to forget I put myself through hell Came crawling back again I met a good woman and you got divorced You came back, guess it’s par for the course I’m telling you things that you don’t want to hear Outside it’s raining in reverse like the bubbles in this beer All the things we cannot change So we learn from the pain And there’s no going back As we break from the traps We’ve clung to since we were young

Rhinestones, rainbows, angels smilin’ on me I’m so thankful, the tank’s full of gasoline Cruising slow with no particular place to go I’ve got my rare Italian breed asleep in the backseat Hold me closer, her hourglass eyes Are telling me we’ve only got so much time It’s not what it seems, the body is a blindfold And my baby’s been breaking me in She’s a rare Italian breed Somethin’ you don’t often see Passing through your town, cruising slow Rhinestones, rainbows The angels must be smilin’ down on me I’m so thankful, she’s my one and only Slow dancing beneath the mirror ball Slow dancing, all eyes are on her She’s a rare Italian breed, somethin’ you don’t often see Passing through your town, cruising slow

about

Painted using the colors of midnight truck stops and neon signs, Nick Gamer's Suburban Cowboy is a paean to the ashes of youth and the grim smile of moving on. It's the kind of nod to Gram and Emmylou you wished you heard more of, combining the best instincts of classic Americana while digging its heels firmly in the present.

Written during the peak of 2020’s west coast wildfire season, Gamer conjures the time's feelings of isolation and dark nostalgic yearning without ever addressing the headlines directly. "I'm a lifer, a cipher...a moonshiner... a pale horse rider..." Gamer declares on Pale Horse, the album's opener- a swaying, country-tinged anthem that manages to sound hopeful while "watching the flames grow higher." From there the album moves comfortably between dark rockers (Riverbed & Tennessee) and polished gems (Sedona) that sound equally at home in the Western cosmos of Lucinda Williams and the Byrd's Sweetheart of the Rodeo.

All crafted by a gifted ensemble of Portland-area musicians, featuring standout vocalist Lauren Hay and background washes of heat-wrenching guitar and pedal steel (Bryan Woolen and Rick Pedrosa), Suburban Cowboy is what it sounds like when a gambler throws his last chips on a big dream: "But who the hell am I? Just some bastard of buckaroo/ Who never left his hometown, who’s dreams are long overdue/ You can find me at a tavern chasin’ bourbon with beer/ In some strip mall sprawl at the edge of the western frontier..."
